Prevalence of candidiasis and oral candidiasis in COVID-19 patients: a cross-sectional pilot study from the patients’ registry in a large health center

CONCLUSIONS: Total candidiasis was significantly associated with increased risk for COVID-19, whereas oral candidiasis showed an insignificant trend. The dental practitioner should be aware of the importance of unexplained oral and systemic candidiasis as a potential harbinger of T and B cell immunosuppression associated with viral infections. COVID-19 may be a risk factor for total candidiasis.

Rare genetic mutation triggering acute liver failure in a toddler requiring a liver transplant

APS-1 is an extremely rare, autosomal recessive condition that often presents with candidiasis, adrenal insufficiency, and hypoparathyroidism. This condition is associated with autoimmune hepatitis in less than 20% of cases, and there have only been a few reports of children with the condition who developed ALF. We present a unique case of an infant with APS-1 who developed ALF and subsequently required liver transplantation.

Development and validation of antibiotic stewardship metrics for outpatient respiratory tract diagnoses and association of provider characteristics with inappropriate prescribing

CONCLUSIONS: Metrics utilizing proportion prescribing for RTDs for which antibiotics are almost never required and proportion prescribing for any RTD were most strongly associated with inappropriate prescribing. APPs and clinicians with family medicine training, with board certification 1997 or later, and who worked in nonteaching or nonurban practices had higher proportions of inappropriate prescribing. These findings could inform design of interventions to improve prescribing and could…

Antimicrobial Stewardship Interventions to Optimize Treatment of Infections in Nursing Home Residents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Effects of antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) interventions to optimize antibiotic use for infections in nursing home (NH) residents remain unclear. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess ASPs in NHs and their effects on antibiotic use, multi-drug-resistant organisms, antibiotic prescribing practices, and resident mortality. Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and…

EXPRESS: Characterization of Drug Resistance in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Cells Based on Laser Tweezers Raman Spectroscopy

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is highly associated with poor prognosis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). This work aims to explore whether the laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS) could be practical in separating adriamycin (ADR) resistance CML cells K562/ADR from its parental cells K562, and to explore the potential mechanisms. Detection of LTRS initially reflected the spectral differences caused by chemoresistance including bands assigned to carbohydrates, amino acid, protein, lipids and…

Increasing frequency of Aminoglycoside-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae during the era of pandemic COVID-19

The emergence of multidrug resistance to aminoglycosides in K. pneumoniae isolates is a growing concern, especially during pandemic Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The study identifies antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae isolated from tertiary hospitals during pandemic COVID-19. Among 220 clinical isolates, the total rate of K. pneumoniae was found to be 89 (40.5%). Phenotyping results confirmed the resistance of aminoglycoside antibiotics in 51 (23.2%) of K. pneumoniae isolates. PCR…

Investigational Agents for the Treatment of Resistant Yeasts and Molds

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the investigational antifungals in clinical development with the potential to address rising drug resistance patterns. The relevant pharmacodynamics, spectrum of activity, preclinical studies, and latest clinical trial data are described.

Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in Candidaemia, Invasive Aspergillosis and Antifungal Consumption in a Tertiary Hospital

In addition to the increase in fungal infections that has been observed in the last few decades, it has been reported that severe clinical COVID-19 can increase the risk of invasive fungal infections. The main objective of this study was to evaluate if there had been an increase in candidaemia and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) cases since the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Data were retrospectively collected from April 2019 to March 2021, from patients admitted to Consorcio Hospital…

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among patients admitted to an intensive care unit with COVID-19 and mortality of those who developed VAP. We performed a systematic search on PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science from inception to 2^(nd) March 2021 for nonrandomized studies specifically addressing VAP in adult patients with COVID-19 and reporting data on at least one primary outcome of interest. Random…

Successful Treatment of Cryptococcal Meningitis and Cryptococcoma with Isavuconazole in a Patient Living with HIV

We describe the successful use of isavuconazole for treatment of an HIV-positive patient with cryptococcal meningitis following induction therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and flucytosine. Because the Cryptococcus neoformans isolate from cerebrospinal fluid had a borderline minimum inhibitory concentration of 8 mg/L, initial consolidation therapy was given with a daily dose of fluconazole 1200 mg based on area under the curve to minimum inhibitory concentration modelling data. Toxicity, and…
