CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VAGINAL MICROBIOTA, CERVICAL AND UTERINE FLORA IN WOMEN WITH THE PAST HISTORY OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS

CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The predominance of the mixed microbiota, represented by various associations of opportunistic and common pathogens, was identified in infertile women with the past history of STIs as a result of microbial culturing of the samples from the uterine cavity. Chronic inflammation in endometrium is caused by a persistent viral-bacterial infection in the uterine cavity, which differs in the species composition from the microbiota of the lower genital tract.

Profiles of multidrug-resistant organisms among patients with bacteremia in intensive care units: an international ID-IRI survey

Evaluating trends in antibiotic resistance is a requisite. The study aimed to analyze the profile of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) among hospitalized patients with bacteremia in intensive care units (ICUs) in a large geographical area. This is a 1-month cross-sectional survey for blood-borne pathogens in 57 ICUs from 24 countries with different income levels: lower-middle-income (LMI), upper-middle-income (UMI), and high-income (HI) countries. Multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively…

Utilization study in real clinical practice of ceftolozane/tazobactam vs aminoglycosides and/or colistin in the treatment of multirresistant or extremely resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained suggest that there have been no differences in effectiveness (clinical or microbiological cure) in favour of C/T, although, in the period studied, it was used in most cases in multitreated patients with a worse prognosis. Randomized and prospective studies would be needed to establish an adequate positioning.

Septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular joint secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection

Septic arthritis of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) is a rare pathology with very few documented case reports available in the literature. In addition, ACJ septic arthritis secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a rarer pathology with only two previously documented case reports in the medical literature to our knowledge. We present the case of a 46-year-old man who was diagnosed with a confirmed ACJ septic arthritis secondary to MRSA following admission to the local…

Albumin Neutralizes Hydrophobic Toxins and Modulates Candida albicans Pathogenicity

Albumin is abundant in serum but is also excreted at mucosal surfaces and enters tissues when inflammation increases vascular permeability. Host-associated opportunistic pathogens encounter albumin during commensalism and when causing infections. Considering the ubiquitous presence of albumin, we investigated its role in the pathogenesis of infections with the model human fungal pathogen, Candida albicans. Albumin was introduced in various in vitro models that mimic different stages of systemic…

Distinct innate immune responses between sublethal and lethal models of disseminated candidiasis in newborn BALB/c mice

Invasive candidiasis is associated with a high incidence and mortality rates in infants, especially in preterm newborns. The immunopathogenesis of the mycosis during the neonatal period is poorly understood. Although several in vivo models exist to study invasive candidiasis, the majority of studies employ distinct routes of infection and use 2 to 6 day-old mice that could be less comparable in studying candidiasis in preterm infants. In this study, by using 0-days-old mice we developed a new…

Investigations on suckling piglets castrated under automated isoflurane anesthesia

CONCLUSION: Isoflurane anesthesia led in over 94 % of the piglets to no or minimal defensive reactions during castration. Anesthetic incidents occurred rarely and no piglet losses were recorded. Therefore, automated isoflurane anesthesia is associated with a low risk for suckling piglets. Measurements of isoflurane concentrations on persons involved were below the internationally lowest limit value. Disinfection of the anesthesia masks may prevent germ transmission between animal groups via this…
