The impact of respiratory colonisation on the development of ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill children

ABSTRACT

Healthcare-associated infections are a serious problem worldwide, as they increase morbidity, mortality and lengthen hospital stays. About 10-20% of patients on mechanical ventilation risk developing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), which varies by geographical region but still is the second most common nosocomial infection in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). VAP mortality is up to 20% in paediatrics.
